Granny’s Sage Stuffing

Let’s clear something up right from the start. I am fully aware that “dressing” is the recipe that is served on the side of the turkey, and “stuffing” is when you actually stuff the dressing inside bird. However, my family has called this recipe Granny’s Sage Stuffing for my whole life, and even though it’s cooked and served in a separate dish, we’re gonna go with it. No sense in changing things now!

When I was little, I was the designated “taster” when my Granny made the stuffing for Thanksgiving. For some reason, it was decided that I had the taste buds to help create the perfect stuffing. I never challenged it, and I was so happy to have such an important role in making such an important meal.

Every time I make this recipe, I can still see my Granny standing in the kitchen in her house coat and slippers mixing up this stuffing with her burnt wooden spoon. I see me standing next to her up on a chair ready for my taste-testing role.

To me, family recipes are rarely just “good food.” They are memories of my life and a way to remember the best people and the best times. I love how food can bring back such amazing memories. So, when you make this recipe, who’s going to be YOUR family’s taste tester?

Grannys Sage Stuffing

Ingredients

Sage Stuffing
  • 1 loaf white bread (cut into 1″ cubes)
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 large onion (diced)
  • 4 stalks of celery (sliced)
  • chicken broth
  • dry sage

Directions

  1. In a large pot or skillet, melt the butter over medium-low heat.
  2. Add in onion and saute for 3-4 minutes. Add in celery and cook another 3-4 minutes until tender.
  3. Cube up loaf of bread into 1″ cubes and put into a large mixing bowl. Once onion and celery have softened, add into the mixing bowl with the bread.
  4. Drizzle in about 2 cups of chicken broth, and sprinkle 1 Tbs sage over the top. Mix together with a wooden spoon. Taste. If you can’t taste the sage, add more (1 tsp at a time). If mixture is too dry, add broth 1/2 cup at a time.
  5. Once you can just taste the sage, and mixture is moist enough and holds together, pour into a lightly sprayed 13 x 9 baking dish. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes.
